Have you ever had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day? Uttered the words “one day I’ll laugh about this”? Wanted to crawl into a hole?
I had one…
Back in 2001, when I was about six months into my events and communications internship at Microsoft, I was tasked with sending confirmations out for the upcoming 100% Club event.
Since I had a good number of Partners and Microsoft team members on my list I decided to do a mail merge with the data. I’d done them before and love how easily they get the job done.
Something wonky happened with that mail merge and the first name on my list got “stuck” on each message that went out. All the rest of the information in the message was correct and personalized for the recipient, except the name at the top of the page.
I was mortified when I found out what happened and wanted to die when I saw the name that went out to over 100 people, including the senior leadership team at Microsoft.
“Dear Tiit Parts”
I immediately started getting replies like “What kind of parts?” and “Um…I don’t think this is right.”
I can laugh about it now.
Then? Not so much.
What’s your story?
